Managing your online reputation is imperative to securing your new role. In an age where we can find anyone online, you must remember that your CV and experience is available for any potential employer to access 24/7. Research has shown that 90% of recruiters and HR professionals refer to social media to decide whether to hire you.

  • Be conscious that different platforms are for different purposes, and effectively managing your profile is an integral part of your job search.

  • Check out what pictures you are tagged in and lock down your privacy settings as much as possible.

  • Google yourself to see what comes up. Pre-screening has become a lot easier in the cyber era we live in and it is all about keeping your profile interesting and relevant.

LinkedIn

  • Don’t let anyone else create your social media profiles.

  • Privacy settings. Lock these down and keep personal information to a minimum.

  • Build relationships with the right recruiters online.

  • Be creative to catch the right people’s attention online. Use appropriate images and videos.

  • Post regularly. Stay on top of posting positive information regularly to build up a good presence. And post at the best times, when people are likely to be looking.

  • Never use social media to complain about current or former employers or clients. People are unlikely to want to work with you if you are seen as a PR liability.

Twitter, Instagram and Facebook

  • Use your social media feed as a platform to communicate your specialist knowledge and expertise.

  • Follow industry leaders and media to retain top industry insight.

  • Maintain a good balance of professional and informal tweets to showcase your personality.

  • Treat it in the same way you do your LinkedIn profile.

  • Publish details about your personal interests and profile-enhancing updates such as your charitable activities, voluntary work, sports or writing.

  • Treat all social media in the same way, with the same respect as your LinkedIn profile.
